Die folgende Paket-Übersicht entspricht der 'Java (TM) Platform, Standard Edition 6, API Specification'.
Der Name von Standardpaketen beginnt mit "java." (Pakete.1).
Daneben gibt es Erweiterungen, deren Name mit "javax." (e'x'tension) beginnt (Pakete.2), und die nicht auf allen Plattformen zur
Verfügung stehen müssen, z.B. javax.swing, eine Parallelentwicklung zu java.awt (3.4). Außerdem gibt es Pakete, deren Name mit
"org." beginnt (Pakete.3), die von Dritten hergestellt wurden,
z.B. org.omg.CORBA (Common Request Broker Architecture), ein Paket
für die Kommunikation von Client und Server im Netzwerk.
Nur das Paket java.lang (Pakete.1) wird implizit importiert,
alle anderen Pakete müssen bei Bedarf explizit importiert werden
(10.2).
